Deadly Blasts Hit Yemen Mosque During Eid Prayers

Suicide bombers have struck a mosque in Yemen’s capital in an attack targeting Shia worshippers that killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens, medics and witnesses said. Aljazeera reports:

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but Sanaa has been shaken by a string of bombings by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in recent months targeting Shia Muslims. Thursday’s blast ripped through the Balili mosque where Houthi Shia rebels who control Sanaa go to pray, according to witnesses.
It came as worshippers marked Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, the most important holiday of the Islamic calendar. Witnesses reported that after a first blast inside the mosque, a second suicide bomber detonated an explosives belt at the entrance as worshippers rushed outside. ISIL, a Sunni Muslim group which controls swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria, considers Shias to be heretics.
ISIL bomb attacks targeting several Shia mosques in Sanaa on March 21 killed 142 people. The group has also claimed attacks on mosques in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The capital of Sunni-majority Yemen has been under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels for the past year. The Houthis have also expanded their grip to other parts of the country.

Breaking News: Olu Falae Regains Freedom

Former Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF) and Afenifere chieftain, Chief Olu Falae, has been released, reports Vanguard.
The newspaper reported that the former presidential candidate was on his way to his country home in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Chief Olu Falae was Monday kidnapped on his farm at Ilado Village in Akure North Local Government area of Ondo State by suspected Fulani militia. The kidnapping happened on his 77th birthday.
It is unclear whether his family paid the N90 million ransom requested by his abductors.

Bayelsa: APC Declares Sylva’s Victory Null And Void, Reschedules Primary

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries which held on Tuesday, September 22, has been nullified.
According to the party’s national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the primaries had to be called off due to security challenges, This Day reports.
He said the party has rescheduled the primaries yet-to-be approved date.

Timipre Sylva

Timi Frank, the deputy national publicity secretary of the party, had earlier told newsmen that there was no primary election in the state.
He disclosed that one of the aspirants forced his will on the electoral committee, which led to the disruption of the exercise.

One of the aspirants, Timi Alabe was said to have led 14 out of 19 aspirants to stage a walk-out during the Tuesday primary election alleging irregularities in the process.
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state, the Chairman of the Committee for the primary was was reportedly escorted out the venue of the event by the JTF security operatives to avoid being lynched.
The Bayelsa state APC guber primary election which held at Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, had produced Timipre Sylva as the winner and the party’s flag bearer in the poll slated for December 5.
Bu Governor Oshiomhole disclosed that the primary did not take place, describing Sylva’s victory as a ‘huge joke‘.
Reacting to this, Sylva had described Oshiomhole’s claims as a deliberate “act of mischief” and “lies”, saying it was very clear Oshiomhole never wanted to conduct the primaries as scheduled, judging from the manner in which he conducted himself during the primaries.

2015 election: Wether we are being punished or not, Ndigbo have no regrets voting for their choice- Ohaneze

While speaking yesterday in Abuja at a press conference to kick-start the 2015 Igbo Day celebration, president of the Ohaneze ndigbo group in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mazi Odozi Elijah Nwodozi, said the Igbos had no regret voting for their choice during the last election

“In the 2015 elections, Ndigbos made a clear choice; it was decisive. We made the best choice, as known to us. So, we have no regrets, whether or not we are being punished for that choice. We are in a democracy. The president is the president of all, irrespective of how any region voted.
This simply shows character, that if an Igbo man decides to support you, he does so no matter the consequence. That shows we are unwaivered. Ndigbos are strong people. We are like a phoenix; we always rise from our ashes. We cannot be broken as a people. We will surely get to the promised land,” he said.

Olu Falae Must Return Within 7 Days – Ondo Farmers Warn FG

The Ondo State Agricultural Commodities Association, predominantly made up of farmers, yesterday, September 23, gave the federal government a seven-day ultimatum to ensure the release of Nigeria’s former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae.

Falae, a chieftain of Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere and the chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) retired as a farmer after years of active political participation.
Falae was abducted on Monday, September 21, at his Ilado farm along Igbatoro road, Akure North local government area of Ondo state.
The Ondo state police command had stated that they suspect Fulani herdsmen were responsible for the kidnap, revealing that the SDP chieftain has had a perennial battle with the nomads over incursions into his farmland.
According to Vanguard, while addressing newsmen after an emergency meeting they held, the farmers warned that the failure to release Falae would elicit a reaction from them that would make an impact across the country.

Speaking on behalf of them, the chairman of the association, Akin Olotu said: ”What we are saying is that the abduction of Chief Falae is unacceptable to we farmers in Ondo state and Southwest.
”We therefore give seven-day ultimatum to the federal government to secure the release of Chief Falae, if he is not released within the next seven days, the farmers in Ondo State will take action that will have a national impact. We should not forget the Agbekoya war in the old Oyo State.”
Olotu opined that the activities of Fulani herdsmen in the state had become a serious problem, even as he called on the government to review the nomadic system of cattle rearing, describing it as obsolete.
”The herdsmen are now turning to armed robbers, they rape, and kidnap, they are now seriously threatening the lives of the people of our communities in this state and if you report to the police, nothing will be done. Now they have kidnapped one of our elders. We will not take this any longer,” Olotu concluded.

Eid Prayers: Protesters Pelt Saraki, Emir, Ex-Minister, Others With Stones In Ilorin

Senate President Bukola Saraki’s travails at the Code of Conduct Tribunal paled to insignificance on Thursday as angry worshippers at the Eid praying ground in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, pelted him, the Emir of Ilorin, Alh. Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, and many political figures with sachets of pure water and stones.
It was learnt that the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Alh. Muhammadu Bashir was not spared the wrath of the protesters.
Others who were victims of the spontaneous mob action were ex-Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ali Ahmad, ex-Speaker Razak Atunwa (now a member of the House of Representatives) Rep Amuda Kannike, a former acting National Chairman of the PDP, Alh. Kawu Baraje, the Taliban of Ilorin, Prof. Oba Abdulraheem, members of the State House of Assembly, all the Baloguns, Magajis and prominent leaders in Ilorin Emirate.
The protesters were said to be angry about the state of the economy of Kwara as well as the non-utilization of the bailout funds given to the state by the Federal Government to offset workers’ salaries.
There was speculation the protesters were reacting to rumours that part of the bailout funds was used to offset the bill incurred during Saraki’s campaign to emerge President of the Senate.
Although the prayer was fixed for 10am, there was tension as early as 8am at the Eid Praying Ground, The NATION reports.
It was evident that most worshippers were out for blood because the initial waazi (sermon) segment of the Eid fell on deaf ears.
As the Senate president and others arrived the praying ground, there was intermittent shout of “Ole! Ole!! Ole!!! (Thief, thief, thief) in Yoruba while others were shouting “Ebi n pa wa!” “Ebi yii tito Saraki!” “A o ki run, e fun wa lounje!” (We are hungry, enough of this hunger Saraki, we refuse to pray, give us food).
The cacophony of vituperations were hardly subsided when stones and missiles began to fly from all over at the dignitaries.
The police, security agents, and members of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, battled spiritedly to curtail the protesters, who remained defiant.
As the atmosphere became increasingly charged, teargas canisters were fired by the police and security agents.
After about 30-minute protest, temporary calm was restored which paved way for the observance of the two Nafilats (prayers).
But as the dignitaries were filing out, the protesters resumed hurling missiles again.
As at the time of publishing this report, there was apprehension in the Senate president’s camp over who was responsible for the attack.
The apprehension was made worse by the fact that Governor Ahmed Abdulfatah, probably aware of security reports of the possibility of a showdown, went to Share, his hometown, to observe the Sallah prayers.

Muslims all over the world are celebrating Eid-el-Kabir today and tomorrow, September 24 and 25 respectively.
The federal government had declared both days as public holidays to commemorate the Muslim festival.

Eid-el-Kabir also called Eid al-Adha is one of the two most important Islamic festivals. It commemorates Prophet Abraham’s willingness to obey God when he envisioned that he was to sacrifice his son.

Buhari Observes Eid el-Kabir Prayers In Daura

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday joined Muslim faithful in observing Eid-el-Kabir prayers in his home town of Daura, Katsina State.
The prayer, which held amid tight security, was led by the chief Imam of Daura, Sheikh Safiyanu Yusuf, at Kofar-Arewa Eid ground around 9.30 a.m.
The imam, in his sermon, stressed the importance of sacrifice in Islam, adding that the sacrifice could be made using a ram, sheep, goat, cow or camel.
He also said that the meat could be given to the needy and even non-Muslims.
The imam urged people to continue to pray to the almighty Allah to give the country peace, unity and stability.
The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farouq, directed all mosques in the emirate to organise special prayers for peace and stability in the nation even as he prayed to Allah to continue to guide President Buhari to be able to lead the country aright.
“We need to intensify prayer for peace and stability in the country, because nothing can be achieved without peace”, he said.
Some of the dignitaries that observed the Eid prayer include the Director-General of the Department of Security Service (DSS), Alhaji Lawal Musa Daura, and other prominent sons of the emirate including religious and traditional leaders among others.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the president and the emir slaughtered their rams after the prayer at the Eid ground.
