Why President Buhari’s Inaugural Speech May Be Called A Disappointment – Idris Usman

Editor’s note: The historic inaugural May 29 speech by President Buhari remains the subject of heated discussion. It touched the hearts of many, while others remain skeptical. Surely it is too late to make conclusions. The global practice is to give politicians 100 days in the office and then compare the promises and the reality.
The critics can be useful, thinks Idris Usman, the director general of Believe Nigeria Initiative, as he gives points why Buhari’s speech was below expectations.
This article expresses the author’s opinion only. The views and opinions expressed here do not necessarily represent those ofNAIJ.com or its editors.
Story highlights:
– The speech was vague, not direct.
– The President’s speech could not have covered every conceivable issue.
– The new president sounded like he was still wooing the electorate for votes.
(Leadership) – Having read and listened to the inaugural speech of President Muhammadu Buhari even with high expectations, one can deduce that Mr President conspicuously refused to dwell on burning issues like unpaid salaries of Nigerian workers who are groaning in pains with no respite in sight.
He equally failed to clarify, in simple terms, how corruption will be tackled, despite directing the Army Command to relocate to Maidiguri to overrun the outlawed religious sect, Boko-Haram, a decision which is quite commendable.
Buhari’s speech was vague, not direct and very disappointing in my view; yes he mentioned that he would tackle the rot in the power sector, but he never said how.
Another intrigue that his speech has triggered off was the fact that nothing was mentioned on foreign policy or bilateral relations as the case may be, despite having over 40 foreign leaders among his audience.
I thought the focus of his speech would have been on strengthening existing law-enforcement capabilities, constitutional crisis, improving socio-economic conditions and redeeming (all or few) of the promises made during the electioneering campaigns and giving us the workable models through which these could be achieved. Honestly, Nigeria is expectant!
Agreed, the President’s speech could not have covered every conceivable issue. However, the Commander-in-Chief cannot brush these issues aside because all key stakeholders want to hear from him; it is from him that they take their cue respectively.
There cannot be sustainable growth, high productivity, job creation or economic development in a crime-infested environment, where businesses cannot operate around the clock; or where labour cannot move freely around or get rewarded.
The crime situation is symptomatic of a deeper social issue; we need to pay keen attention and do all we can at the highest level to tame and correct the causation.
President Buhari also needs to be reminded that election campaigns are over as he still sounded as though he’s still wooing the electorate for votes.
In a nutshell, the speech utterly lacks direction and is, therefore, a disappointment.

According to the eyewitness, a distress call was sent to the special task force in charge of the village, and the security agent told villagers to run to safer places as they were not well stocked with firearms and ammunition to engage the gunmen in battle.
He said, “As a result of this, all the villagers left their houses and took refuge in neighbouring villages. In the middle of the night, the gunmen returned and set all the houses ablaze.
“Some house where relief materials were kept for onward distribution to victims of the earlier attacks were also looted by the attackers while they set the remaining ones ablaze.
“Over 1,000 residents who fled their homes are now sleeping in primary schools in neighbouring villages.”
The chairman of Riyom local government area, Josephine Piyo was urged by the members of the task force not to visit the village to see the aftermath of the attacks, as they could not guarantee her safety in the village.

Not less than eight persons have reportedly lost their lives following a rocket launcher fired by the dreaded and deadly Boko Haram group in Ngomari.
It was learnt that gallant Nigerian troops from the 7 Division resisted the attack as the insurgents had attempted to take over Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in the early hours of Saturday.
According to eyewitness, Usman Jani, the house located near EYN Church Ngomari was hit around 1:00 am when the battle was ongoing resulting in the death of eight occupants.
Another eyewitness,  Mohammed Sanda, who is a civilian JTF, said they went out to support the military in repelling the insurgents, adding that the trenches dug around Maiduguri helped greatly in preventing the insurgents from advancing.
“There is no way they can come into the city except through the main roads as the military has dug trenches all around the city and are being manned by troops.
“When they came through Dala Kabamti, they were unable to pass because of the trenches; they started through RPG into the town. This morning we took some people to General Hospital”, he said.

Cleric Advises Buhari On Cabinet Appointments, Praises Jonathan

President Muhammadu Buhari receives yet another recommendation on how to choose the right people into his cabinet to tackle corruption.
Francis Ogunmodede, episcopal vicar/dean, Lekki region of the Catholic arch. diocese of Lagos, warned the new president that he may lose the fight against corruption if he made wrong appointments.
The priest also advised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Buhari not to relax in the pursuit of their vision for change.
The recommendations were given during an interview with NAN in Lagos, on May 30, 2015, Saturday:
“APC needs self discipline to remain focused. President Buhari is regarded to be an upright person and without flair for corruption; that is one thing that is characteristic of him and people love him for that.
“He should work on that and strive to nip in the bud any corrupt practices. He has to select the right type of people now, look into their history and see if they have flair for corruption or if they have been accused of mismanagement of funds or other negative tendencies.
“We need selfless people who would not think of themselves but would think of serving the society.
“I am not envisaging that President Buhari would be able to wipe out corruption completely, but my prayer for him is for him to diminish it as much as possible,” Ogunmodede said.
The priest praised commended former President Goodluck Jonathan for giving the birth to a new dawn of democracy in the nation and for breaking the jinx of African leaders holding onto power.
As the inauguration period is over, it is only a matter of days Nigeria knows the real Buhari’s decisions on the new cabinet. In the several past weeks some data on the possible ministers has already leaked. The latest list contained 40 names which were reportedly presented for screening.

I submitted Onu’s name for SGF – Okorocha

Gov Rochas Okorocha accompanied by Sen Ifeanyichukwu Ararume in an interactive session with journalists in Imo State preceding his swearing-in for a second term in office
Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has denied having any faceoff with a former Governor of Abia State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, over the choice of who becomes the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Okorocha cleared the air while addressing journalists at the Government House Owerri on Friday, adding that he has good relationship with Onu and that Onu’s name was among the three he submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for consideration for the office of the SGF.
He said: “When Ndigbo lost the chance to produce the Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives, which was initially zoned to the South-East, we then brought the idea of the SGF, I nominated Onu, Senator Chris Ngige and Prof. Anthony Anwuka (Secretary to Imo State Government). But this was before Buhari said he was not going to take any list from any governor.”
At his inauguration for a second term at the Dan Anyiam Satadium, Owerri, Okorocha promised the people of the state to expect a vibrant government that would be committed to service, stressing that he kept his campaign promises to the people in the last four years.
He said: “Four years ago, I gave you my word. I told you that my word was my bond. I gave my people my word when I assured them that I would keep the citizens safe and secure within the four walls of our peace-loving state.
“In two years of the Rescue Mission, kidnapping, baby factory, armed robbery, including bank robbery and other violent crimes became a thing of the past. Those crimes have been eradicated from our great land”.

Boko Haram Attacks Maiduguri At Midnight With RPGs

A top security officer at the Department of Security Service (DSS) pleading anonymity told newsmen that “7 persons were killed, 17 injured and about two houses completely destroyed as a result of the RPGs pumped into the town by Boko Haram insurgents”.
The thunderous blasts of the RPGs and constant gunshot sounds forced residents of the state capital to abandon their sleep.

7 Reasons Why You Should Consider Dating Short Guys

Kevin-Hart-Eniko-Parrish-Cover
A whole lot of ladies have specifications regarding the type of man they want to date. These may range from how financially buoyant he is, his intelligence, his abs, how handsome he is and so on. Some ladies do not have specific traits they want and as such can be considered equal opportunities dater. However, short guys have had to bear the brunt of finding an ideal date since they rank deep in the pecking order. This may not be the same for ladies that don’t consider physical traits as a necessity for dating but there are many reasons why you as a lady should consider dating short men.
These men should not necessarily be way shorter than you are but after reading this article, I bet you would want to reconsider and try dating short men.
Your Feet Will Never Get Sore
It is a common phenomenon for women to wear heels which comes with apparent discomfort. Chances are you’d develop swollen ankles and bulging calf muscles if you wear heels a lot of the time. Dating short men would help put this in check as you’d want to drop the stilettos and go with flats or small heeled shoes. This relieves the discomfort and will most probably put you in a comfortable height range with your short boyfriend. And if you actually enjoy wearing heels, you’d have the appearance of a model next to your boyfriend and most short men like to flaunt their pretty women in the face of taller guys.
Your Selfies Will Be Very Good
Apparently, since you both are relatively close in terms of height difference, the selfies are always excellent. The selfies you take will fit in well into the Instagram square and as such, there would be no need for a selfie stick. This is one of the perks that comes with dating a short man.
They Have A Huge Sense of Humour
Most short guys are already used to the Butt of jokes they get from being short and as such possess an amazing sense of humour. You’d find out that you find it easy to take jibes at them which they hardly take personal because of their sense of humour.
Sex In The Shower Is Way Easier
As time goes on, you are bound to find out that short guys have a whole lot of advantages. Due to the alignment of your body part with his, as a result of your proximity in height, having sex in the shower would be way easier. Neither of you would have to squat or bend in an uncomfortable position for either of you to fit. This is a major plus for short guys.
Most Have A Big Wiener
A lot of short guys compensate for their lack of height with their penis. Most have a penis size that averages 6 inches. As such, if you are the type that wants your man big, go out and give that short man a chance and you just might be happy for it.
They Have Loads Of Confidence
The confidence of short men is mostly high as it seems that they make up for what they lack in height with their swagger. Some of them might seem cocky but it is mostly as a result of brewing confidence. They will come on to you with such vigour that you will be surprised.
You Don’t Have To Worry About Neck Pains
Surely, it looks veryROMANTIC when you see a guy that has the height of a typical basketball player kissing a short girl standing on her toes. But that is surely not comfortable when they are making out. Short guys will have and five relative access to every part of the body during make out sessions. This is another reason to date them.
Well, the height of a man or woman doesn’t really matter as the parts that are most important have nothing to do with it. Other things such as how much he can make you smile after a rough day and how much he loves you should count more than the way you and people around view him when he stands next to you.
