President Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)
The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched by President of the United

the statistics: nearly 1 in 3 Africans are between the ages of 10 and 24, and
approximately 60% of Africa's total population is below the age of 35. Who will
empower and lead these young Africans? Who will shape the future of business and
entrepreneurship, civil society leadership, and public sector management? In order to
answer these questions, YALI promotes three models designed to identify and empower
young leaders: the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship, YALI Network and now the
establishment of Regional Leadership Centres across Africa.
Supporting this progress, the YALI Regional Leadership Centre (RLC) West Africa, Accra,

South West Must Produce The Next PDP Chairman, Fayose Declares

posted by Som Offor.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has said that it is not optional that the South-West geopolitical zone will produce the next chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, warning anything to the contrary will be resisted by the zone.
Governor Ayodele Fayose
Fayose called on leaders from the zone to gear up for the contest for the position next year advising that all stakeholders in the zone must come together to make this happen, Thisday reports
He stressed that the appointment of a new chairman from the North-East for the party at the moment is a waste of time noting that the current acting chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, should be allowed to complete the tenure of his predecessor, Adamu Mua’zu.

Fayose made this statement through his spokesman, Lere Olayinka saying: “Since the PDP will pick its presidential candidate from the North in 2019, the South-west zone which has not produced the party’s national chairman should take the position next year.”
The Ekiti state governor said the reason while his championing for the emergence of a South-West candidate for the position is that since the next presidential candidate is likely to come from the north; it is only reasonable for the chairman to emerge from the South noting that South-West should produce the new helmsman of the party.

A youth leader from South-South, Afoke Akporua has however, disagreed with Fayose’s  proposition, saying the governor want to encourage illegality in the party by requesting that a caretaker committee to continue to pilot the affairs of the party at the national level.
He added that his would rob the North-East the opportunity to complete their tenure asking the party to cede the position back to the zone.
Meanwhile, Fayose had told former minister of the Federal Capital Territory,Bala Mohammed to of becoming the next chairman of PDP. He said this when Mohammaed visited the governor to drum support for his ambition.

Buhari never promised he was going to do anything in 100 days- Lai Mohammed

posted by Som Offor.

APC national spokesperson, Lai Mohammed this morning on Channels TV said President Buhari never promised to do anything within his 1st 100 days in office.
"Buhari never promised to do anything in 100 days, that's the honest truth. You see, when you are running a campaign, all kinds of literature will emerge from all sorts of groups but I came here and I said there are only just two documents that you can judge a party with. that is the constitution of the party and the manifesto of the party. Those are the only two documents that are registered with INEC you can go to court on or hold a party accountable for" he said
His statement comes a few days after presidential spokesperson, Shehu Garba released a statement distancing President Buhari from two documents tagged "One Hundred Things Buhari Will Do in 100 Days" and the other, "My Covenant With Nigerians.". The documents had a list of promises President Buhari and APC during their campaign, vowed to fulfill within his 1st 100 days in office if elected.

The statement in part reads "
"Both pamphlets bore the authorized party logo but as the Director of Media and Communications in that campaign, I did not fund or authorize any of those. I can equally bet my last Kobo that Candidate Buhari did not see or authorize those publications. As a consequence of these publications, expectations have been raised unreasonably, that as President, Muhammadu Buhari will wave his hand and all the problems that the country faces- insecurity, corruption, unemployment, poor infrastructure would go away. But that notwithstanding, President Buhari has given the job his best shot and the whole country is saying that we never had it so good. He has re-instituted the values of hard work and administrative efficiency. The President says times without number that this country needs to fix governance and that he won't tolerate laziness".

A former House of Representatives member, Dr Nya Asuquo, has appealed to Nigerians to be patient with President Muhammadu Buhari over his recent appointments.
Speaking with pressmen during the occasion of his 67th birthday celebration on Sunday in Calabar, he said that all will be balanced in no distant time, adding that it is too early and unfair for Nigerians to criticise Buhari over his recent appointments.
Asuquo said, “There are over 5,000 appointments yet to be made. Nigerians should be patient with the president for he will make a balance in no distance time.
“As president, people will always criticise your actions and inaction. Nigerians should not judge Buhari by the few appointments he has made.
“There will be ministers, heads of government department, federal boards, advisers and others.’’
Asuquo furthermore urged those appointed to embrace the clarion call with all their heart, not seeing it as an avenue to embezzle public funds.

Give Jonathan administration due credit, former ministers tell Buhari

posted by Som Offor.

Former ministers under former President Jonathan have released a statement where they asked the Buhari led government to stop attacking the administration of their former boss and give them some credit. In the statement signed by former Minister of National planning Abubakar Suleiman and released today August 30th, the former ministers listed the various achievements during their tenure, stressing that the successes that have been recorded in the present government was as a result of the good foundation they laid. They urged Buhari to press on with the anti-corruption fight, but that the fight must be done in a fair and non-partisan manner, in line with due process, and not as a political witch-hunt. The statement after the cut...

We, the Ministers who served under the President Goodluck Jonathan administration, have watched with increasing alarm and concern the concerted effort by the Buhari administration and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to condemn, ridicule and undermine the efforts of that administration, in addition to impugning the integrity of its individual members.
While we concede that every administration has the right to chart its own path as it deems fit, we nevertheless consider the vilification of the Jonathan administration, to be ill intentioned, unduly partisan, and in bad faith. The effort that has been made to portray each and every member of the Jonathan administration as corrupt and irresponsible, in an orchestrated and vicious trial by media, has created a lynch mentality that discredits our honest contributions to the growth and development of our beloved nation.
We are proud to have served Nigeria and we boldly affirm that we did so diligently and to the best of our abilities. The improvements that have been noticed today in the power sector, in national security, and in social services and other sectors did not occur overnight. They are products of solid foundations laid by the same Jonathan administration.
Contrary to what the APC and its agents would rather have the public believe, the Jonathan administration did not encourage corruption,
rather it fought corruption vigorously, within the context of the rule of law and due process. For the benefit of those who may have
forgotten so soon, it was the Jonathan administration that got rid of the fraud in fertilizer subsidies, which had plagued the country for decades. This helped to unleash a revolution in agricultural production and productivity.
It was also the Jonathan administration that supported the institutional development of strong systems and mechanisms to curb
corruption in the public service and plug revenue leakages. These included the development of the Government Integrated Financial Management Platform, The Single Treasury Account (TSA), and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Management Systems (IPPIS), in addition to the biometric registration of civil servants and pensioners which saved the country over N100 billion paid to ghost
workers and ghost pensioners.
To ensure greater transparency and integrity in the oil and gas sector, the Jonathan administration ordered investigations and put
mechanisms in place to check the theft of Nigeria’s crude oil. It was also under the Jonathan administration that a Nigerian Content policy was introduced, which opened up that sector to Nigerians in a manner that was not previously the case. It was also the Jonathan administration that mobilized and secured the support of our neighbouring countries to ensure a robust multinational response to the menace of terrorism and insurgency, resulting in notable advancements in the fight against terror. President Jonathan personally initiated the collaboration that led to these advancements and ensured that Nigeria provided the needed financial support for the Multinational Joint Task Force.
It was the Jonathan administration that repaired and rehabilitated over 25, 000 kilometres of our nation’s roads. Nigeria also became a profitable and preferred investment-friendly destination. It was under President Jonathan, for example, that Nigeria’s electric power sector became more competitive and attractive to local and foreign investments.
The same administration promoted the rule of law, free speech, fundamental human rights, and a robust freedom of information regime. Women’s rights to participate in public life and the Federal Character principle as well as other Constitutional principles were also respected. In every respect, our administration promoted inclusive governance and encouraged all stakeholders including the private sector to play key roles in the transformation of Nigeria.
It should also not be forgotten that the Jonathan administration strengthened electoral institutions and created a peaceful environment for democracy to thrive. On this score, it is sad and ironic that the chief beneficiaries of that same legacy are the most vociferous today in condemning President Jonathan and his team.
Perhaps the new administration and the APC would be sincere enough to publish the details of the hand over notes they received.
In addition, the Buhari administration should be fair enough to acknowledge the good works of the Jonathan administration. No administration can be either completely bad or completely good.
President Jonathan’s achievements in moving this country to greater heights deserve to be duly acknowledged. We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to build on these achievements.
We also urge him to press on with the anti-corruption fight, but in a fair and non-partisan manner, in line with due process, and not as a
political witch-hunt.
The various lies and fabrications being peddled by some self-appointed spokespersons of the administration may entertain the unwary, but such sensationalism may achieve the unintended effect of de-marketing our
country within the international community. All such persons playing to the gallery for whatever gains should be called to order. The
name-calling of members of the Jonathan administration and the trial by news media should also stop.
We encourage President Buhari to continue with the probes, but this must be in strict accordance with his oath of office to treat all
Nigerians equally and with the fear of God.
We have reserved our comment until now, in the fervent hope that once the euphoria that may have inspired the various attacks on the past administration wears off, reason will prevail. But we are constrained to speak up in defence of the legacy of the Jonathan administration, and shall do so again, for as long as those who are determined to
rubbish that legacy, are unrelenting in their usual deployment of blackmail, persecution, and similar tactics.
Dr Abubakar O. Suleiman
Former Minister of National Planning

28-year-old Guvnor Ace (born Ronald Samawere) who had earlier been accused of 'dating an ancestor' got married to 68-year-old Lisa Johnson on August 20 in a civil ceremony held at the Uganda Registration Service Bureau in Kampala before friends and family members. Speaking to Uganda’s WBS TV on why he married his wife, the Ugandan dance-hall artiste said that young girls are a financial liability and some are not genuine.
"I have no regrets, because these young girls will ask for airtime and on sending it, they will not even call you, all they do is to beep. All they do is beg!" he said
On how he met his wife, Lisa Johnson he revealed,
"I shared my Gutujja video in 2014 on my wall and this was Lisa’s comment, 'I like the way he sings though I don’t know what he’s singing about.' It was then that I sent her a Facebook request."
Debunking claims that he married his wife because of money, he said,
"We’ve been chatting for close to eleven months, so I don’t get it when people say that I’m in it for money. They call her a pensioner but as far as I’m concerned, she is still working and earning."

On what he love about his new wife, he said
"Last December, she opted to come to Uganda to celebrate Christmas with me and since then, we’ve been inseparable. Lisa likes me the way I am and she likes my music too, otherwise someone else would want you to remove your dreads and give up on music just to be with them."

Church Members Chase Lagos Pastor From Pulpit Yesterday (Photo)

posted by Som Offor.

Hell was let loose yesterday, Sunday, August 30, at the United Methodist Church, in the Oshodi area of Lagos.
The church premises
The Punch reports that members of the church rejected their pastor and chased him away for allegedly impregnating his housemaid who is also a member of his church. According to report, the pastor, Barkuma Andrew, was stopped from leading the church seven months ago when the housemaid, Grace, had complications after aborting the pregnancy. The pastor lives with his wife, children, wife’s cousin, Favour, and Grace in a three-bedroom flat inside the church premises.
It was reported that the members had pleaded with the Central Conference of the church in Taraba State to help look into the alleged incident. However, when the district did not do anything about it, the congregation sought the service of another pastor three weeks ago. The congregation got to church at about 10am yesterday for Sunday service only to see that Andrew and some “unknown” people had commenced the service.

This sprouted the anger of the members of the church as they chased pastor Andrew and his folks out of the church. Men from the Makinde police division, including the DPO, were said to have intervened after the incident was reported at the station. A member of the church and a former secretary to Andrew, Moses Sherima, said that the pastor sent his wife to her village when he impregnated Grace. He said:
“My room is opposite pastor’s apartment and I was his secretary. When he started dating that girl (Grace), I called his wife’s cousin, Favour, on the matter. She said Grace used to tell her whenever the pastor had sex with her. At a point, I had to move upstairs when I could no longer bear it. The day that abortion happened, I was sleeping inside my room when I heard Grace screaming. I rushed there and saw blood coming out from her private parts. When the wife came back from one of her numerous journeys, he told her to send Favour away.”
Another church member, John Komboroh, said the church was embarrassed by Andrew’s conduct, adding that they were tired of his leadership. He said:
“The petition of adultery against the pastor had been sent to the bishop at the Central Conference. He came here, but did not do anything about it. That was why we wrote to the main body, the Southern Conference to give us another pastor. His (Andrew’s) action is an embarrassment to us. We don’t want him again.”
The new pastor of the church, Reverend James Sunday, said:
“We were about to start our service this morning when we met the old pastor and some unknown people already holding the service. I calmed down my people to avoid chaos.”
Another resident and a female member, who identified herself only as Blessing, said the pastor had once made sexual advances to her.
“My husband is not always at home. The pastor would call me in the night and asked if I had slept. One day he entered my room and gave me a soft slap on my back. I had only the wrapper on me. I was surprised and told my neighbours.”

When contacted on the telephone around 1pm on Sunday, Andrew said he was in a meeting and promised to get back to The Punch on the incident. He told The Punch Metro that he was still at the meeting when he was called back around 5pm.
Meanwhile, a South African pastor, Pastor Peniel, is popularly known for a number of strange acts. He had . He had for the consumption of the church members.
He was arrested and charged with animal cruelty after feeding his congregants snake but he later released on bail and he said .
about two weeks ago, vowing to feed Mnguni snakes and rodents, exactly as he had done to members of his ETDM church.

According to reports, the Federal Ministry of Justice had taken over the case from the Department of State Security Service who had charged Dasuki with the alleged offence punishable under section 27(I)(a)(I) of the Firearms Act Cap F28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

Punch reported that the trial ought to have commenced last week but it could not go on because of the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmmud Mohammed, to various heads of court not to sit throughout the week to enable lawyers and interested judges to participate in the just-concluded one week-long Annual Bar Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association.
It further reported that the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, on Friday assigned the case to Justice Adeniyi Ademola, who is the court’s vacation judge.
It would be recalled that the DSS had on July 16, 2015 searched the ex-NSA’s homes in Asokoro, Abuja; and Sokoto, where it claimed to have recovered seven high calibre rifles, including magazines and military gears in the houses.

The secret service said there action was necessitated by credible intelligence, which linked him to acts capable of undermining national security and claimed Dasuki’s arraignment was in line with democratic practice and “our avowed commitment to the rule of law, in which nobody is deemed to be above the law, no matter how highly placed in the society.”

Rivers probe: Go and defend yourself, Wike tells Amaechi

posted by Som Offor.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has reacted to Amaechi's decision not to appear before a panel of Inquiry. The Governor called on Amaechi, to go and defend himself before the judicial commission of inquiry sitting in the state. Gov. Wike said that it was wrong for the former governor to describe the commission as illegal even when the court had ruled that the panel was in order.
The governor, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, said he would not take issues with the former governor over the setting up of the judicial commission of inquiry.
It is necessary for Amaechi to defend himself on certain issues concerning how the state was managed during his tenure.
The Incumbent Governor explained that Ameachi was put to shame when the court pronounced that nothing was wrong with the setting up of a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the immediate past administration.
He said, "It is laughable that Amaechi would call a panel that has already been declared lawful by a court of law illegal. This means that as of when he questioned its proprietary in court, he thought the court would declare it illegal but was shamed." Going further, he said, "Media trial will not vindicate him as the sentiment he is trying to whip up has failed."

According to sources; ‘’On February, 10, 2015, at about 7pm, Muritala Aweniya and members of his gang killed one Oluwasheun Babalola, a 16-year-old boy at Owoseni- Ishola Street, Ilasamaja, Lagos. On that same day, Mrs Mary Babalola, mother of the late Oluwasheun was shot on her right leg by the same gang. On April 9, 2015, Olayemi Mathew Eniola, aka Esi-Oluwo, was also killed by the same gang.
It was learned that Obey Idi Araba, was among the suspects arrested and charged to court in 2012, for the murder of one Wasiu Ajose, aka Apase, by policemen from FEDSARS. He was however, released through a motion for bail and he escaped prosecution.
Relation of victim opens up
The elder brother of one of the victims, Bamidele Abiodun, a vulcaniser at Apersin Street who witnessed the incident told Crime Guard: ‘’ The day my brother was killed, he came to my shop with a faulty plasma TV for repairs. After fixing the television, he took it and dropped it in his mother’s shop which was the next shop.
Few minutes later, I heard sounds of gunshot. Later, I heard Abass screaming, “what have I done?” from where I hid inside my shop, I saw three men, one with a shot gun, the other with a cutlass while the third had no gun on him.
The three of them were Obey, Agbaje and Omowest. It was the one with the short gun that shot my brother on his stomach and left him in the pool of his blood. They kept shooting sporadically to scare sympathisers as they escaped to Idi-Araba”.
Another witness of the brutal killing of the teenager, a trader at Amu Timber Market simply called Abdul-Wasiu narrated his own account. ‘’I was at Aborishade Street along   Itire road, Mushin, on February, 2015, when gunmen held residents in the area hostage.
They armed themselves in a commando-like manner and started shooting sporadically and as a result, two people died instantly from stray bullets while many others sustained serious bullet injuries.
One of the people killed was a driver of the pastor of a celestial church opposite Aborishade street and 16-year-old Sheun Babalola, who was shot along with his grandmother from Abule -Igbehin area of Ilasamaja.’’
A 64-year-old victim who was shot on the right leg, Mrs Mary Babalola also narrated her heart-wrenching experience in the hands of the gang members. ‘’ I am a native of Ayede Village in Ekiti state. I have five children, including Oluwasheun Babalola, who was shot dead in my presence.
On that fateful day, at about 7pm, a group of young men stormed the area and started shooting sporadically. One of their bullets killed my son while another hit my right leg. I can’t walk because of the stray bullet that hit me.’’
Account of suspect
In his defence Muri denied being a member of any armed robbery gang but, admitted that he was a former leader of an ethnic militia group called OPC at Mosalashi Street, Mushin area of Lagos state. Narrating the fracas between his group and a rival cult gang that led to the killing of innocent persons in Surulere area,  26-year-old Muri Aweniya said, ‘’ I am a school drop out.
I dropped out of the Polytechnic Ibadan. I was initiated into cultism when I was a student by one Wale who was the leader of Bukania confraternity in 2014. Our cult gang has several dangerous operational weapons such as pump action, single barrel gun and cutlass. It was my cult gang that shot and killed one Lekan at Ayilara street in Suru-lere in March.
Other people who were killed by my my cult group in Shitta area were: Fatai, Afeez, Ramoni, Akeem and Saheed. These people were killed because of the fracas between my gang and Lateef Akinpelu aka Obey’s group.
Lateef’s gang is also responsible for the death of many people like Murphy, Shitta, Raimo and Kabiru at Ogunmola area of Surulere, Kilo and Epo at Ayilara, Lekan and Larne at Suru-lere, Deji and Afeez at Shitta, Aisha and Ola at Lawanson.
‘’ The late Raimo has a pregnant Woman who was killed by a stray bullet while attending the birthday party of Murphy’s son. She was killed alongside Murphy on that fateful day. Early this year, in the month of February, my gang attacked and killed one Isiaka. On April 9, my gang was hired to assassinate Esi Oluwo, a Chairman of NURTW but I wasn’t part of the operation.’’

The second suspect, Lateef Akinpelu aka Obey Idi Araba, told Crime Guard: ‘’I am from Abeokuta in Ogun state. Before my arrest, I was the chairman of NURTW, Idi Araba chapter. I was a former OPC member in Idi Araba chapter. I stopped parading myself as the group leader since detectives from Federal SARS came to arrest me in 2012, and recovered weapons used by my gang for operation.
After my arrest, I was charged to court and there after, remanded in prison custody pending the DPP’s advice. Surprisingly one day, a prison warden called and released me. I don’t know how my bail condition was perfected and since then, I have never gone back to the court.
I was not part of the people that murdered Abass Olasupo at Mushin It was my boys that killed him and they briefed me that they invaded the area with guns and killed the deceased on 21st February 2015. It was Biodun Akinwumi aka Aluta, Agbakun, Taiwo, Kehine and Wasiu Agbaje that were responsible for the brutal murder of Abass Olasupo. I stopped having anything to do with them since my release from prison.’

65-Year-Old Landlord Defiles 7-Year-Old-Girl For Rituals – Victim’s Mother Alleges [PHOTO]

posted by Som Offor.

In another case that has highlighted the increasing child s*xual abuses in Nigeria, a 65-year-old landlord, in Akowonjo area of Lagos, Mr. Ganiyu Sani, has allegedly defiled a seven-year-old girl, Blessing. But this time, the parents of the victim believe he did it for ritual purposes.
The civil servant mother of the victim told our correspondent that on Monday, August 17, 2015, when she got back from work and was having dinner with her children, Blessings started to touch her crotch and complain of pain.
“I felt the part she was touching and asked what was wrong with her. I thought she was referring to her lower abdomen and believed it must be stomach ache. But she insisted that it was her private part.
“I asked if she fell down and hurt herself but she simply shook her head. I asked if someone hit her there while she was playing with other children in the neighbourhood, she said no. I started suspecting there was something bigger than what she was telling me.
“I pleaded with her to tell me what happened. That was when she told me about what Baba did. I could not contain my anger. I was shocked, angry and sad at the same time that such an old man could do such a thing to my daughter. My daughter had no reason to lie.”
Blessing’s father, a trader from Ebonyi State, works in the Eastern part of the country while his wife and the children live in Lagos because of his wife’s work.
He was in the East when he received a call from his wife about what had happened to their daughter. He told his wife to take a neighbour along to go and confront Baba, who denied everything immediately.
Baba Sani, a landlord who lives on renting out Danfo buses to commercial bus drivers, lives just two houses away from Blessing’s parents.

Blessing, an exuberant, fair complexioned girl, was not shy when our correspondent spoke with her about what Baba Sani did to her.
She explained that the old man usually crossed from his house to fetch water from a tap beside their house.
She said, “On Friday, my mummy was not around and he came to fetch water (like he normally does). When he was passing in the front of our house, he asked me to follow him to come and collect biscuit.
“When I got to Baba’s house, he put off my shoes and carried me to his bed. He removed my pants and lay on my chest. When I was shouting, he said I should not shout, that he would give me biscuit and N20.
“When he finished, I saw blood coming out and Baba used a cloth to clean it. He said I should not tell anybody. He gave me biscuit and N20.”
Shockingly, without Blessing’s mother knowing, Baba Sani allegedly called the girl and defiled her again the following day, a Saturday.
To dispel doubts about the girl’s allegation, she was asked to explain the location of Baba Sani’s bedroom inside the building and her description was found to be exact description when our correspondent eventually paid Baba Sani a visit.
Our correspondent spoke with Baba Sani in company of the director of Esther Child Rights Foundation, Esther Ogwu, who the case was initially reported to by the girl’s parents.
The man, who walked with the gait of someone approaching senility, started off by saying Blessing’s mother was an acquaintance, even though the girl’s mother said she had never had reason to speak to him before.
Baba Sani said, “The girl’s mother once approached me about a month ago to lend her N500. She sent her daughter to collect it and I gave it to them. Later, the girl with her younger sister came to my house that Friday to ask for money and I gave them N20.
“I did not do anything. I don’t know anything about what they have accused me of. God is my witness. I am just surprised about why I am the one the girl is accusing of such a thing.”
When asked how the girl could possibly know where his bedroom was in the house, the old man said he had no idea.
Blessing’s mother said she had many other co-tenants and neighbours and said she couldn’t have imagined asking Baba Sani to lend her any money.
A test conducted at the Mirabel s*xual Assault Referral Centre at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, confirmed that the girl was indeed defiled as lacerations on her private part were consistent with s*xual assault.
The case was reported at the Gowon Estate Police Division.
Ogwu explained to our correspondent that she was disappointed that initially the police did not handle the case as if they were interested in prosecuting the man. She said rather than charge him to court, they released him from custody despite the fact that they had got the report of the test conducted on the girl.
The child rights activist said, “According to the information I was given, the man was pretending that he was insane when he was arrested. Everybody in the neighbourhood could testify that nothing was wrong with him.
“It should not be too hard to enforce the law in this case. The Child Rights Act is there. It is unfortunate that the mother of the child did not monitor her daughter well. There are so many young children in that neighbourhood that could have been victims of the man.”
Baba Sani was arraigned before an Ikeja family court on charges of defilement and child abuse on Monday. He was remanded in prison custody while the case was adjourned till September 4, 2015

21 Health Tricks To Teach Your Body

posted by Som Offor.

Whether it’s curing a throat tickle, resolving your headache in minutes or experiencing supersonic hearing, these 21 tricks are proven methods of fooling your body to achieve a desired result, whether that’s relieving pain or just having fun.
1. Cure a Tickling Throat
When you were 9, playing your armpit was a cool trick. Now, as an adult, you can still appreciate a good body-based feat, especially if it serves as a health remedy. Take that tickle in your throat: It’s not worth gagging over. Here’s a better way to scratch your itch: Scratch your ear. “When the nerves in the ear are stimulated, it creates a reflex in the throat that can cause a muscle spasm,” says Scott Schaffer, M.D., president of an ear, nose, and throat specialty center in Gibbsboro, New Jersey. “This spasm relieves the tickle.”
2. Experience Supersonic Hearing
If you’re stuck chatting up a mumbler at a cocktail party, lean in with your right ear. It’s better than your left at following the rapid rhythms of speech, according to researchers at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine. If, on the other hand, you’re trying to identify that song playing softly in the elevator, turn your left ear toward the sound. The left ear is better at picking up music tones.
3. Calm Yourself With Cold Water
Nerves getting the best of you. Take a deep breath and spash cold water on your face. This triggers the mammalian diving reflex that is genetically in all animals including humans. The lower temperature of the water and you holding your breath also causes your body to think it’s diving into cold water. This reflex allows you to use oxygen more efficiently.
4. Overcome Your Most Primal Urge To Pee
Need to pee? No bathroom nearby? Fantasize about what ever turns you on. Thinking about s*x and arousing fantasies preoccupies your brain, so you won’t feel as much discomfort, says Larry Lipshultz, M.D., chief of male reproductive medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine.
5. Feel No Pain While Giving Blood
Love donating blood but hate the needle prick? German researchers have discovered that coughing during a needle stick can lessen the pain. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, the trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord.
6. Swallow Your Horse-Sized Supplements
Those huge health supplements are sometimes a pain to swallow. Want to swallow more than one at a time without gagging? Try this trick to get them down: take a drink of water, and tilt your head forward instead of backward. The capsule should float, and will be at the back of your throat, ready to swallow.
7. Clear Your Stuffed Nose
Forget Sudafed. Here’s an easier, quicker, and cheaper remedy to relieve sinus pressure: Alternate thrusting your tongue against the roof of your mouth, then pressing between your eyebrows with one finger. This causes the vomer bone, which runs through the nasal passages to the mouth, to rock back and forth, says Lisa DeStefano, D.O., an assistant professor at the Michigan State University college of osteopathic medicine. The motion loosens congestion; after 20 seconds, you’ll feel your sinuses start to drain.
8. Fight Acid Reflux By Sleeping Position
Worried that chilli will repeat on you tonight? Try this preventive remedy: “Sleep on your left side,” says Anthony A. Starpoli, M.D., a New York City gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at New York Medical College. Studies have shown that patients who sleep on their left sides are less likely to suffer from acid reflux. The esophagus and stomach connect at an angle. When you sleep on your right, the stomach is higher than the esophagus, allowing food and stomach acid to slide up your throat. When you’re on your left, the stomach is lower than the esophagus, so gravity’s in your favor.
9. Cure Your Toothache
Just rub ice on the back of your hand, on the V-shaped webbed area between your thumb and index finger. A Canadian study found that this technique reduces toothache pain by as much as 50 percent compared with using no ice. The nerve pathways at the base of that V stimulate an area of the brain that blocks pain signals from the face and hands.
10. Make Burns Disappear
When you accidentally singe your finger on the stove, clean the skin and apply light pressure with the finger pads of your unmarred hand. Ice will relieve your pain more quickly, Dr. DeStefano says, but since the natual method brings the burned skin back to a normal temperature, the skin is less likely to blister.
11. Stop the World from Spinning
Feeling dizzy? Put your hand on something stable. The part of your ear responsible for balance–the cupula– floats in a fluid of the same density as blood. “As alcohol dilutes blood in the cupula, the cupula becomes less dense and rises,” says Dr. Schaffer. This confuses your brain. The tactile input from a stable object gives the brain a second opinion, and you feel more in balance. Because the nerves in the hand are so sensitive, this works better than the conventional foot-on-the-floor wisdom.
12. Unstitch Your Side
If you’re like most people, when you run, you exhale as your right foot hits the ground. This puts downward pressure on your liver (which lives on your right side), which then tugs at the diaphragm and creates a side stitch, according to The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Men. The fix: Exhale as your left foot strikes the ground.
13. Stop A Nose Bleed
Put some cotton on your upper gums–just behind that small dent below your nose–and press against it, hard. “Most bleeds come from the front of the septum, the cartilage wall that divides the nose,” says Peter Desmarais, M.D., an ear, nose, and throat specialist at Entabeni Hospital, in Durban, South Africa. “Pressing here helps stop them.”
14. Make Your Heart Stand Still
Trying to quell first-date jitters? Blow on your thumb. The vagus nerve, which governs heart rate, can be controlled through breathing, says Ben Abo, an emergency medical-services specialist at the University of Pittsburgh. It’ll get your heart rate back to normal.
15. Thaw Your Brain Freeze
Press your tongue flat against the roof of your mouth, covering as much as you can. “Since the nerves in the roof of your mouth get extremely cold, your body thinks your brain is freezing, too,” says Abo. “In compensating, it overheats, causing an ice-cream headache.” The more pressure you apply to the roof of your mouth, the faster your headache will subside.
16. Prevent Near-Sightedness
Poor distance vision is rarely caused by genetics, says Anne Barber, O.D., an optometrist in Tacoma, Washington. “It’s usually caused by near-point stress.” In other words, staring at your computer screen for too long. So flex your way to 20/20 vision. Every few hours during the day, close your eyes, tense your body, take a deep breath, and, after a few seconds, release your breath and muscles at the same time. Tightening and releasing muscles such as the biceps and glutes can trick involuntary muscles–like the eyes–into relaxing as well.
17. Wake Up a Limb That Feel Asleep
If your hand falls asleep while you’re driving or sitting in an odd position, rock your head from side to side. It’ll painlessly banish your pins and needles in less than a minute, says Dr. DeStefano. A tingly hand or arm is often the result of compression in the bundle of nerves in your neck; loosening your neck muscles releases the pressure. Compressed nerves lower in the body govern the feet, so stand up and walk around if they fail you.
18. Impress Your Friends
Next time you’re at a party, try this trick: Have a person hold one arm straight out to the side, palm down, and instruct him to maintain this position. Then place two fingers on his wrist and push down. He’ll resist. Now have him put one foot on a surface that’s a half inch higher (a few magazines) and repeat. This time his arm will cave in. By misaligning his hips, you’ve offset his spine, says Rachel Cosgrove, C.S.C.S., co-owner of Results Fitness, in Santa Clarita, California. Your brain senses that the spine is vulnerable, so it shuts down the body’s ability to resist.
19. Breathe Underwater
If you’re dying to retrieve that quarter from the bottom of the pool, take several short breaths first–essentially, hyperventilate. When you’re underwater, it’s not a lack of oxygen that makes you desperate for a breath; it’s the buildup of carbon dioxide, which makes your blood acidic, which signals your brain that somethin’ ain’t right. “When you hyperventilate, the influx of oxygen lowers blood acidity,” says Jonathan Armbruster, Ph.D., an associate professor of biology at Auburn University. “This tricks your brain into thinking it has more oxygen.” It’ll buy you up to 10 seconds.
20. Encode Long-Term Memory
Your own! “If you’re giving a speech the next day, review it before falling asleep,” says Candi Heimgartner, an instructor of biological sciences at the University of Idaho. Since most memory consolidation happens during sleep, anything you read right before bed is more likely to be encoded as long-term memory.
21. Relieve a Migraine Instantly
The next time you are about to reach for some pills to get rid of your headache, use your thumb and forefinger and pinch down on the muscle on the web of your hand (thumb on the back of your hand and forefinger underneath) and press for 2 minutes. Repeat. Most headaches and migraines will ease after just 4 minutes. This shiatsu point addresses headaches by dispersing stagnant Ki (i.e. blocked energy) and moving blood in the head, neck, and other parts of the body.

APC Not A Threat To My Re-Election, Says Dickson

posted by Som Offor.

Seriake DicksonGovernor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has expressed confidence that he will be re-elected for a second term in office.
He hinged his confidence on a record of concrete achievements, rather than promises made by his opponents ahead of the December 5 governorship election in the state.
Dickson said his administration’s support base was far more robust now than it was in 2012, a statement by his media aide, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said on Friday.
According to the governor, when he was running for office in 2011, he did not have the benefit of a support base comprising the House of Assembly members, local government chairmen and councillors, as compared to now when all these formidable groups are behind his re-election bid.
Dickson said, “The campaign team we have, when we unveil it, you will see that it is made up of who is who in politics of their communities, wards and their constituencies. It is an impregnable team.
“The governor’s support base is actually far more robust now than it was in 2012 and we have the advantage that I am running on a record of concrete achievements, not promises as any other person may be.
“The core restoration team is still intact. As a matter of fact, we are even stronger now because at that time, we didn’t have the National Assembly members supporting me.
“Now, all the National Assembly members from the state are on board; all the 21 state House of Assembly members are also on board. I didn’t have local government chairmen when I was running last time, now they are all on board. I didn’t have councillors supporting me, now they are all on board, commissioners and elders of the state are all on board”.
Responding to a question on whether he was not concerned about his support base been eroded following the recent defection of some Peoples Democratic Party chieftains to the All Progressives Congress, Dickson said a number of the defectors were loyalists of former Governor Timipre Sylva.
He added that the defectors were displaced when his government came on board; pointing out that the development was not a big deal as they had gone to join their benefactor in the APC.
“We took out a sitting government. So, if you see a man who was Sylva’s deputy governor and his speaker, who became acting governor defecting to join Sylva, you shouldn’t be surprised, because they were not with us. It may sound as if some big thing is happening because they are the same characters that we replaced”, he explained.
