A nine minute magic from Lionel Messi helped Barcelona to UEFA Supercup victory over Sevilla at the Boris Paichadzis Erovnuli Stadioni, Tbilisi in Georgia.
Though Barcelona won the goal fest match 5-4, they were lucky Javier Mascherano was not sent off as early as the 2nd minute when he felled Jose Antonio Reyes close to the box.
Sevilla came into the game as underdogs against the treble winner but were confident from the beginning. Ever Banega curled a superb 25-yard free-kick into the top left-hand corner in the third minute.
Messi would however reply with two freekicks of his won. The Argentina captain scored a suberb freekick in the seventh minute before producing an even better effort in the 15th minute to give Barcelona the lead.
Just before half-time, Suarez had a goal ruled out for offside but the Uraguan would leave his mark on the game as he assisted Rafinha to score from close range as half-time beckoned.
Seven minutes after the break, Benoit Tremoulinas’ gifted the Catalans a three goal lead as Sergio Busquets picked up his sloppy pass, squared for Suarez who made no mistake this time.
Sevilla would however not go down with a fight. In the 57th minute, Reyes side-footed home Vitolo’s left wing cross.
Jeremy Mathieu felled Vitolo and referee Willie Collum awarded a penalty which was duly converted by Frenchman, Kevin Gamiero who smashed a hard shot into the top left hand corner.
Against all beliefs, Sevilla were level in the 81st minute as Immobile outwitted Bartra and sent a drifted cross from the right which met fellow new signing Konoplyanka.
The match ended at full time as 4-4. Extra-time seemed forever as it looked like both teams would enter penalties but Leo Messi and Manchester United bound Pedro Rodriguez had other ideas.
Mariano was outwitted by Messi and he fell the little man. Messi step up to take another freekick but his effort hit the wall. His driven shot from the rebound was saved by Beto but Pedro was on hand to score the winning goal.
Former AC Milan defender, Adil Rami almost scored another goal for Sevilla as Immobile found the big man with a cross from the right but his effort just went wide of the post.
Barcelona held on to secure just their second UEFA Supercup victory.
