Two Sisters To Be Gang-Raped After Their Brother Eloped With Married Woman

posted by Som Offor.

Two sisters were sentenced to be raped and then paraded naked after their brother ran away with a married woman, Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh state, India.
The girls aged just 15 and 23 had to leave their home after their brother Ravi Kumar, 25,  ran away with a married woman from a higher caste. The duo were dating for two years until their families discovered the relationship and did everthing possible to keep the pair apart.
Meenakshi Kumari, 23, and her little sister were sentenced to be raped for their brother’s actions
As Ravi comes from he lowest in India’s caste system called the Dalit or ‘untouchables’ and his girlfriend 21-year-old Krishna is from higher Jat caste, the pair were not destined to be together. They were separated and Krishna was forcibly married off to another man in February but the lovers managed to escape, leaving Ravi’s sisters to live in horror.

And several months later an unelected all-male village council reached a verdict – Ravi’s sisters are to be raped and paraded naked around the streets with their faces blackened for the brother’s actions. After the ruling was handed out both sisters ran away to the capital, while their family were allegedly tortured by police and the Jat community members.

Twenty-three-year-old Meenakshi Kumari said: I can’t sleep, I’m very scared. How will we ever return home or to our village? If we ever return they will harm us or rape us. If not today then in the future. Jats never forget and they will not forget this humiliation. They want their revenge. It is wrong. We did nothing wrong so why should my sister and me be punished.

They loved each other and it is they who decided to go. Why should we suffer?’We have not left the house, as we are scared they might send someone to attack us. I am finding it very difficult to cope. I am very scared. People today are still living in the caste system; it’s the root of everything here. Right now I do not have any hopes, our future is ruined.”
It is known that girls were able to submit their petition for protection for their family at the Supreme Court an dAmnesty International have also launched a petition appealing for India’s authorities to intervene into the case and protect the two sisters.
