Chelsea sealed their first home win of the Premier League season with a 2-0 victory against Arsenal in a fierce London derby.
Diego Costa’s antics got Gabriel Paulista sent off late in the first-half, with the striker having escaped a dismissal moments earlier, before Kurt Zouma headed Chelsea into a lead moments after the break. Santi Cazorla was later dismissed, leaving Arsenal with nine-men, before Calum Chambers deflected a ball into his own net late-on.
Arsenal
started the game in a decent fashion and were being allowed plenty of
time on the ball by Jose Mourinho’s side, who seemed happy to sit-back
and soak the pressure before launching a move on the counter-attack.
Chances were few and fair between though, with the only saves being produced were comfortable ones from Petr Cech as Chelsea pushed forward. The flow of the game also changed as the game approached the half-hour mark, as the hosts were enjoying a decent spell on the ball.
Arsenal’s first moment of note came as Mesut Ozil slipped through a weighted pass to Theo Walcott but his finish was comfortably saved by Asmir Begovic. A big chance then occurred at the other end, as Cesc Fabregas lofted a ball over to Pedro, who couldn’t finish, before Eden Hazard appealed for a penalty under pressure from Gabriel.
It all kicked off before the break as Diego Costa escaped a red-card for a swing on Laurent Koscielny, with resulted in the Spaniard and Gabriel getting a yellow card, before the Brazilian centre-half reacted to the striker’s antics and earned his dismissal.
Arsenal made the games first substitution early in the second-half as they introduced Calum Chambers for Francis Coquelin, as they plugged the hole left by Gabriel’s dismissal.
Pedro volleyed wide early after the break as Chelsea applied pressure immediately at the start of the second-half. The Blues then took the lead as Fabregas looped in an inviting free-kick, which Kurt Zouma headed into the bottom corner.
Arsenal had a decent chance to equalise when a long ball caused confusion in the Chelsea defence but Alexis Sanchez failed to provide the required touch to send the ball into the net, before Walcott sent a wayward curling effort wide.
Arsene Wenger introduced Olivier Giroud and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the final 15 minutes of the game, replacing Ozil and Alexis Sanchez. However the game took a turn for the worse when a clumsy tackle from Cazorla resulted in the Spaniard earning his second-yellow, reducing Arsenal to nine-men.
The game was sealed right at the death as Hazard’s effort struck Chambers and went past Cech, giving the Blues a two-goal lead and a valuable result.
