Rivers Governorship Election Was Not Rigged – INEC

The claims by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that the governorship elections in Rivers state was rigged has been rebuffed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The two main contenders, Nyesome Wike of PDP and Dakuku Peterside of APC
The electoral body which opened its defence in the state’s governorship election petition tribunal sitting in Abuja today, September 17, said they have witnesses to back up their claim.

Accordig to the News Agency of Nigeria, the counsel to INEC, Onyechi Ikpeazu led one of the witnesses, Ebikoru Tebekaemi, in evidence before the tribunal today.
Tebekaemi, who supervised the election at Obiakpo local government area in the state, said the election was duly conducted in 15 out of 17 wards in the local government area he monitored.
He said: “My lords, it was only at ward 12 and 13, which are Rumuigbo and Rumokuta, that election did not take place.
“I was also not aware that people were seen at a football pitch thumb printing ballot papers in favour of Gov Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).’’
He also claimed that sufficient electoral materials were distributed across Obiakpor and other parts of the state during the election.
Furthermore, he tendered as exhibits a copy of the election result sheets of the Obiakpor local government.
Meanwhile, the tribunal has adjourned till Friday to enable the commission produce more witnesses.
