Yet again, the All Progressive Congress
(APC), through its the National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, has disowned one of its campaign promises to Nigerians.
President Muhammadu Buhari has disassociated himself from two of his campaign documents containing promises on what he plans to do during his first 100 days in office.
Mr Mohammed disowned a billboard on social media which bears large portraits of the then candidate Buhari and his running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and three bold faces of pupils in school uniforms, has a banner that reads in capital letters: “ONE MEAL A DAY.”
According to reports, the provision of one meal daily to pupils in public schools is one of the 100-day campaign promises of the documents, entitled: “My Covenant With Nigerians” and “One Hundred Things Buhari Will Do In 100 Days.”
But denying the promise, Alhaji Mohammed in a telephone chat with Dailytimes said that the billboard could have emanated from any source.
“The President never said he would do any specific thing within the first 100 days. Anybody can say whatever they like, we remain focused” he said while adding that the billboard could have emanated from any source.
The report added that the “My Covenant With Nigerians” which carries Buhari’s pledge to Nigerians includes; “Publicly declare my assets and liabilities and encourage my political appointees to also publicly declare their assets and liabilities.
“Affirm that our strategy for tackling corruption will not only focus on punishment. Rather, it will also provide incentives for disclosure and transparency.
“Show personal leadership in the war against corruption and also hold all the people who work with me to account.”
Other pledges are; “Inaugurate the National Council on Procurement as stipulated in the Procurement Act so that the Federal Executive Council, which has been turned to a weekly session of contract bazaar, will concentrate on its principal function of policy making.
“Review and implement audit recommendations by Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).
“Work with the National Assembly towards the immediate enactment of a Whistle Blower Act.
“Work with the National Assembly to strengthen ICPC and EFCC by guaranteeing institutional autonomy including financial and prosecutorial independence and security of tenure of officials.
“Make the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) an autonomous and operational agency.
“Encourage proactive disclosure of information by government institutions in the spirit of the Freedom of Information Act.
“Ensure all MDAs regularly comply with their accountability responsibilities to Nigerians through the National Assembly.
“Work with the leadership of the National Assembly to cut down the cost of governance; and
“Present a national anti-corruption Strategy.”
